Baldur's Gate 3 Long Rest Not Working [Bug Fixed 2024]

Written By Jason Andrews

Being a strategic, party-based RPG adventure game, Baldurs Gate 3 offers a multitude of activities to keep your character healthy and alive. In the context of this game, Long Rest is crucial to restore points, spell slots, and more.

However, more than one reason in the game prevents you from utilizing Long Rest and fast travel.baldur's-gate-3-long-rest-not-working

In this article, I will explain why you encounter “You cannot end the day while you have a downed party member” with all your party member breathing.

Without further ado, let’s check it out.

Why Won’t Baldurs Gate 3 Long Rest Work?

Long rest in BG3 is not working because you lack resources. For the first time to try a long rest, you need at least 40 camp supplies. A Glitch or bug can also prevent characters from long resting. Besides, mods can create conflicts and break the long rest in the game.

You can do a partial Long Rest when there are not enough camp supplies, but that is a far cry from full Long Rest. It can only boost you by 50%.

Using mods, on the other hand, has been popular among Baldurs Gate 3 players. But it only made things worst for thousands of gamers. As a result, you may experience tons of issues such as being unable to do fast travel or Long Rest not working at all.

How to Fix Baldurs Gate 3 Long Rest Not Working?

To fix Baldurs Gate 3 Long Rest not working, ensure you have 40 or more camp supplies. These are basically consumable items. Down your main character and Help him up to fix the bug. And finally, remove any mod installed in your game. Do the same if this glitch comes up in BG3 multiplayer mode.

Here are the methods to fix Baldurs Gate 3 long rest not working:

1. Acquire Enough Camp Supplies

With the Long Rest feature, you can end the day and restore hit points and spell slots. For this, the game asks for 40 camp supplies the very first time.

These supplies are food items. To acquire them, loot and collect from enemy corpses after a battle. Look out for food while you explore the game. Also, highlight lootable objects to make it easier. Last but not least, buy supplies from a shop.

2. Down Your Main Character & Help Him Up

The nasty bug in Baldurs Gate 3 shows “You cannot end the day while you have a downed party member”  when you try to do a full Long Rest with your character. But all of your party members are still alive.

First, try to load a previous save and check whether Long Rest is available. If the bug still exists, close the game and the client. Then re-open it once again.

For a persistent Long Rest not working problem, down your main character and help him heal with another party member. This will surely get rid of the problem. At least, it did for me and many others.

Here’s how to down your main character and get him up in Baldurs Gate 3:

  • Choose a different character.
  • Right-click on your main character and select Attack (Main Hand Attack). bg3-attack-main-character
  • Repeatedly hit your main man until he’s down.bg3-main-character-down
  • Help your downed man. bg3-help-downed-man
  • Switch to the main character now.bg3-switch-to-main-character
  • Click on the Campfire button.
  • Choose the crescent moon button after that.bg3-long-rest

Voila! You can go back to the camp and Long Rest again.

3. Uninstall Mods

Larian Studios has stated very clearly to players in email replies that third-party mods are causing all the bugs, including Long Rest not working, being stuck at camp, etc. Therefore, uninstall mods from Baldurs Gate 3.

To completely uninstall and delete mods in Baldurs Gate 3:

  • Navigate to [Steam install location]\SteamApps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\Data.
  • Delete the Mods folder.
  • Get to C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur’s Gate 3.
  • Remove the modsettings.lsx from the Profile folder.
  • Open Steam and go to Library.
  • Right-click on Baldurs Gate 3 and choose Properties.
  • Go to Installed Files.
  • Click on Verify integrity of game files.

For GOG, press the Verify/Repair button. In case you are on Vulkan API, change it to DirectX and vice versa. Load a place in the game where you are not in the camp. Get to the camp from there and save. Now quit the game.

Re-open the game client, and switch to your original API, whether it is Vulkan or DirectX. Now load the game you just saved. Long Rest will be available and working fine from now on.

Last Bit

Dowing the main character is the best way around when the Long Rest glitch in BG3 hits. It worked every time in my case. However, any mod installed in the game can also force the Long Rest to stop working.
