Discord Nitro is a $9.99 subscription per month, unlocking exciting perks. It’s pretty lucrative to get the Nitro subscription for free.

Scammers take advantage of it to lure people into their servers. They send fake DMs to Discord users saying that a server is hosting a Nitro giveaway, joining the server will enroll the user into the giveaway.

Or, they announce you as the winner of a giveaway, and you need to join a server to redeem the Nitro subscription.

The scheme is to attract people into joining the servers, increase the server member count, then sell the server on black markets.

Sometimes the message will mention a short duration (1 hour, 30 minutes, etc.) to enter the server. Otherwise, you’ll lose the giveaway.

You might be asked to invite a specific number of people to the server to avail of the free Nitro. Scammers are able to gather 10-30k members into a server using this technique.

The scammers show edited screenshots as proof. They’ll send Nitro gifts to some users in some cases, but most likely, they’ll be expired ones. They’ll take screenshots of these expired gifts to convince more people.

Therefore, you’re not getting any Discord Nitro subscription gift by joining a server. It’s a big scam.

Many scammers go as far as to send DMs saying that you have won a free Nitro subscription. By clicking the link on the DM, you can avail the free Nitro sub.

You might be tempted to believe it and click on the link if you get such a message. But you mustn’t do it at any cost. In most cases, the link is a phishing link stealing your info or log-in credentials.

Some browsers mark such links as fraud, but you can’t expect it from all browsers.

You should not, under any circumstance, give your email, username, and password by clicking the link. Discord will never ask you the password.

There are many cases where the account gets compromised and used to scam more people. Let’s say you’ve clicked on the scam link and gave your email and password.

The scammers will then log in to your account and use it to send the same scam message to your friends.

Your friends will believe the message as they got it from a friend and not some random user. They’ll click on the link, making the same mistake as you.

1. The offer is too good to be true.
2. The message will have grammatical errors, including bad punctuation and capitalization. Official messages from Discord or other professional organizations won’t have grammatical mistakes.
3. The bot is unverified. Even if a bot is verified, the name and profile picture of the bot will be unprofessional/abnormal. When a bot is registered, it gets the verification tick. So the tick doesn’t mean much.
4. Original Nitro gift has a particular embedded message style like a message from Discord and a Claim Gift button alongside the link. You can claim real gifts by clicking the button within the app. No need to click any link and open a browser.
5. The link sent to you is suspicious. The real Nitro gift links have the (discord.gift) domain.
6. The bots/accounts might be marked as spam or renamed to “spambot.”
7. The account or the bot is entirely new to you. There’s no history of previous communication, and it’s unfamiliar or unrelated to you.
8. The message claims to be an official gift or giveaway for an official event, but the message is not from system tagged account. You’d also receive an email for any official gift.
9. The server they’re asking you to join has a suspicious profile picture, or the name contains the words “free,” “invite,” “gift,” etc.

What Actions Is Discord Taking Against Nitro Giveaway Servers?

As it seems right now, Discord is not serious regarding the issue, and it’s a low priority to them. There are some automated actions against the servers, but there’s no action against them for a large part.

As I’ve said above, when you click on the scam link, your account gets compromised, and scammers gain access to it. They start sending invites through your account.

When the Discord system sees a large pool of messages with suspicious domain links sent from your account, your account gets banned. So most affected accounts get banned eventually.

If they’re using a bot to send the messages, the bots sometimes get renamed “scambot” by Discord. But it doesn’t stop the bot from sending more messages, and most people might not notice it’s a scam.

Sadly, they can accumulate thousands of users on their server through this gift scam, and people fall for it. You can find hundreds of such servers still up and running.

You can also find such scams taking place in the form of Discord gift cards instead of a Nitro subscription.

Discord should take steps to ban the servers, admin accounts, and associated bots from Discord. They should also IP ban to stop further account creation using the same network.

Nitro giveaway servers can inflict real damage to your account. Sometimes they want to increase the member count and sell the server or use it for promotion.

But in other cases, clicking on the link compromises your account and puts your friends at risk.

You must know to differentiate between real giveaways or gifts and fake or scam ones. I’ve already discussed it above.

But you might accidentally click on such links or join a server. To prepare for such scenarios, you can take steps to protect your account.

Here are the steps to protect yourself from Nitro Giveaway servers:

1. Enable 2-factor authentication on your Discord account. Go to User Settings > My Account > Enable Two-Factor Auth.
2. Never give your credentials (email, username, password) to anyone. Discord never asks for these.
3. If you accidentally join such invite servers, DM some server members explaining the problem.
4. Leave and block the server.
5. Report the server to Discord.
6. Disable DM from Mutual Servers between you and the scam message. Open the message, click on the sender username from the top, and go to the Mutual Servers tab to see the mutual servers. Then open the mutual server, right-click on the server name, select Privacy Settings and disable DM.
7. Disable DM from all servers if no mutual servers are found. Go to User Settings > Privacy & Safety > Allow direct messages from server members and turn it off.
