Not long ago, 1TB storage was a dream for gamers. Funnily enough, people are now doubting that capacity for gaming.
Seeing all the buzz on the internet, it probably crossed your mind too, right?
Don’t be troubled! In this article, I will answer all the questions and clear your doubts regarding 1TB storage for gaming. So, buckle up and keep reading.
Is 1TB Enough for Gaming?
Yes, 1TB is enough for gaming for a common user. Typically, installed modern games consume 30-50GB of storage on average. Considering the upper average game size limit, you can store at least 20 games in 1TB of space. That’s a lot of games to play at once.
You see, in the past, game size was really compact. Generally, they varied from the 10-15GB range. Any game more than 15GB was a rare commodity. At that time, 320GB and 500GB storage were pretty common among gamers.
As the game engine and texture quality improved significantly over the years, they started to take up a lot of space. High storage capacity also became cheaper to produce and gained popularity among mainstream consumers.
As a result, 1TB has become the go-to storage capacity for any new PC builder.
On top of that, SSDs also have become cheaper. An SSD as a boot drive and a high-capacity hard drive as the storage disk is a common configuration nowadays. So the entire 1TB for gaming is more than enough storage, to begin with. You are probably thinking, what about games like Forza Horizon 5? It takes 103GB of drive space.
That’s a valid question. But that isn’t the case for every game. One or two games with absurdly high disk space won’t really make a 1TB hard drive obsolete.
However, if you are a gamer who installs a lot of mods, 1TB may become inadequate. For example, one of the blockbuster titles, Red Dead Redemption 2, consumes over 150GB of disk space.
Install mods, and boom! Your game is now sitting somewhere between 180-200GB.

How Much Storage is 1TB?
You hear a lot about 1TB, but how much is it?
To put it into perspective, imagine you are writing documents on your computer. You’ll be able to write 6.5 million document pages in 1TB. From the beginning of time, all incidents can be written, and you’ll still have pages left.In terms of photos, you will be able to store 250,000 photos captured by a 12MP camera. And we all know how good a professional 12MP camera is.
Right now, 1TB may seem like a lot. But it solely depends on the type of file you are storing.
For instance, A true 4K movie can take up to 50 to 150GB of storage, which will
allow you to store 6–20 movies at best. That’s a relatively low number.

How Many Games Can You Store on 1TB?
Observing the size pattern with the recently released games, it is safe to say that 15-20 games can be installed on 1TB storage. This number can vary depending on the installed game type.
As an Illustration, I had exactly 19 games installed on my 1TB hard drive. I used an SSD as a boot drive.
However, game size has increased significantly with the development of newer game engines and graphics technology. Large texture data, open-world maps, game data and resources have increased vastly over the years.
For example, the texture file size of Call of Duty : Warzone was 25GB! That is a ridiculous number. And finally, Warzone ended up being 175GB, including single-player and multiplayer.
Is 1TB Enough for Gaming on PS5?
Yes, 1TB on top of PS5’s 667GB is quite enough for gaming. As the average PS5 game size is between 50-80GB, you will be able to keep at least 15-17 games installed simultaneously.
This number is pretty good for a PS5 gamer. Some games can exceed that size limit, and game numbers will decrease.
PS5 games are built on next-generation game engines. So, graphics are massively improved over the last PlayStation console.
But all these improvements come with a caveat— large file size.
For example, the very recent release of The Last of Us Part I has been remastered for PS5 with next-generation graphics. This game ended up being 79GB. In comparison, the PS4’s The Last of US Remastered version was only 40GB.
