AMD unveiled the long-due FSR 3 along with Hyper RX, Radeon Boost, and Noise Suppression at Gamescom 2023. AMD claims gamers will see up to a 2x performance improvement in supported games with superior image quality. That includes DX11 titles as well.

FSR 3 Supported GPU List
AMD Radeon RX 7000, RX 6000, RX 5700, RX 590, and Nvidia RTX 40, RTX 30, RTX 20, GTX 16, and GTX 10 series support FSR 3. However, not all cards support the frame generation feature due to hardware limitations. Only Radeon RX 5700/Nvidia RTX 20 or above GPUs are eligible for this.

AMD confirmed only a handful of games as of now that support FSR 3. And the number is 12. However, developers have implemented FSR in over 300 games since AMD first introduced it. So, it’s safe to say more games will support FSR 3 in the future.

What is New in FSR 3?
Unlike AMD’s previous temporal upscaling technology (FSR 2), FSR 3 introduces real-time frame generation in games. It’s a direct response to Nvidia’s frame generation feature. It takes advantage of the AMD Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF)2 optical flow and temporal game data like the motion vectors to generate the next frame in supported games.
This will boost the gaming performance up to 2 times. At high resolution, such as 4K, gamers will notice the uptrend in FPS counts even at maximum graphics with ray tracing enabled. Also, in CPU-limited scenarios, it will be extremely helpful.
Now, latency is a big issue while generating frames in a game. AMD thought of that and integrated a much improved AMD Radeon Anti-Lag+ in FSR 3.
That said, AMD recommends running games at 60+ FPS before turning on FSR 3 to reduce latency. So, uncap the game’s framerate or Vsync.
Native AA is another exciting addition to FSR 3 over its predecessor, FSR 2. It basically allows a user to enable FSR 3 without upscaling the image quality. New high-quality anti-aliasing and sharpening from FSR are employed to improve the image quality. This is especially useful where default AA does not produce sharp picture quality.
Last but not least, AMD baked in a UI processing feature in FSR 3 to get rid of any artifacts in the user interface of a game. Not to mention, FSR 3 remains open source like the previous iterations.

Will FSR 3 Work on All games?
FSR 3 will only work in supported games. Currently, 12 games are ready to take advantage of this technology. Upcoming games will have FSR 3 support as well. Hopefully, older games will also receive an FSR 3 update in the coming months.
Is FSR 3.0 Better than FSR 2.0?
Yes, FSR 3 is much better than FSR 2. FSR 3 comes with new technologies to boost framerate in games up to 2x on average. Some games like Forspoken see a massive 3.3x more FPS when FSR 3 is enabled.
Is Frame Generation an FSR 3 Feature?
Yes, frame generation is an exclusive feature for FSR 3. Previous versions of AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution do not support this technology. This feature delivers much higher FPS in games.
