Upon arriving at the Wyrm’s Crossing Fortress, Lord Gortash informs the player that there is an imposter or doppelganger in the party acting as an ally. Although raised by a devil, he speaks the truth in this instance.
But where is this imposter? And who is it?
Well, in this guide, I’ll walk you through how you can find imposters in Baldur’s Gate 3. Let’s take a quick glance.
Who is the Imposter/Doppelganger in BG3?
Shapeshifter Orin can transform into any of the party members in BG3. She is the faceless imposter or a doppelganger of a real party member. The character Orin pretends to be is a random choice. As a result, the imposter’s identity is not the same in every playthrough.
Orin disguises herself to sneak into your camp and vandalize the progress against the Mind Flyers cult. She steals, misdirects, causes chaos, and inflicts violence within the party and the camp to sabotage.
In this whole mischievous activity, she’s not alone because Mind Flyers assassins back her up.
How to Find Imposter in Baldurs Gate 3
Move to the eastern side of the City Sewers and get inside via the Elfsong Tavern entrance. It is also the sanctuary of the Emperor. Keep going forward and enter true sewers. Just when you step in, Orin will show up disguised as a party member. During Act 3, the imposter turns up at random.
Talking to Gortash, however, can reveal the possible suspect for the imposter. As Orin the Red is a shapeshifter, she can take the form of any member, such as Lae’zel, Halsin, Gale, or others, and even the NPC Yenna.
But before coming face to face with the doppelganger, you can identify her easily with a close observation.
Here’s how to detect imposter in Baldurs Gate 3:
- Imposter will behave strangely. It will feel uncanny and out of place.
- Imposter will lack critical and obvious information about the original character.
- You’ll notice the absence of key items in the inventory of an imposter.
- Often, the doppelganger will miss out on activities.
- The imposter will provide wrong info about an adventure that a real character would get right.
Now, the character she pretends to be is now in her captivity at Bhaal’s temple. When you confront her, she will offer multiple options to go forward with—
- Kill Lord Gortash, take the Netherstone from him, and bring it to the Bhaal’s temple.
- Fight Orin and her assassins.
If you choose to help her kill Lord Gortash, she will release the captive party member. And rejecting her will bring down more challenges. You’ll have to get to the Temple of Bhaal and play a new mission to save your party member.
Rescue Your Party Member from Orin’s Captivity in BG3
Only defeating Orin will free the party member who is held hostage. At the start of the rescue mission, you’ll see Orin raging about your choice and willing to kill your ally, who is tied down on the ritual stone.
In her words, “It lied to me. It lets the tyrant live and comes crawling into Bhaal’s sanctum instead. Did it think it could protect? Did it think it could save? Only the blades can offer salvation”. And she goes on with some more lines.
At the end of this dialogue, 3 choices will appear on the screen. Choose [PERSUASION] You said Bhaal wanted us to fight. He will reject this offering or [INTIMIDATION] Anything you do to him, I will inflict on you a hundredfold. This will provoke Orin to fight you. And in the next cutscene, she will turn into a monster.
If you successfully defeat her, you’ll be able to retrieve her victim and the Netherstone. It’s worth noting you’ll have a little chat with the emperor in the process.
Over To You
In BG3, the dialogue you choose changes the storyline. So when you confront the imposter, choose them carefully otherwise, you might get your ally killed. For early detection of the doppelganger, talk to Lord Enver Gortash. He might give you a hint.
